Opus 174 – 186 (1991-92) The initial idea for doing one painting which I called Black Angels, came from George Crumb’s string quartet called Black Angels. It wasn’t until I discovered Gustav Dore`s illustrations of Milton`s Paradise Lost, that the thought of doing a series emerged. I was struck by the Wagnerian drama-like quality of these illustrations, particularly the ones depicting the conflicts between the fallen angels and good angels. I have always been interested in the conflict of opposites eg. - good/evil, chaos/order, the Nietzschean duality of the Apollonian and Dionysian. This emerged metaphorically in the form of black angels versus white angels. There are thirteen paintings in the Angel series. There are four pictured here:  |
