Opus 174 – 186 (1991-92)

The initial idea for doing one painting which I called Black Angels, came from George Crumb’s string quartet called Black Angels. It wasn’t until I discovered Gustav Dore`s illustrations of Milton`s Paradise Lost, that the thought of doing a series emerged. I was struck by the Wagnerian drama-like quality of these illustrations, particularly the ones depicting the conflicts between the fallen angels and good angels. I have always been interested in the conflict of opposites eg. - good/evil, chaos/order, the Nietzschean duality of the Apollonian and Dionysian. This emerged metaphorically in the form of black angels versus white angels.
