Nocturnes

2010 -2011

This series was inspired by Chopin's piano pieces of the same name.

The prominent feature of these paintings was the bold, black lines that floated on the surface and sometimes thrust out at the viewer. These lines were the descendants of those tentative lines, first made with pastels, then with paint, to delineate shapes in the Cambodia and Song of the Earth series. In the earlier Prometheus and Helios series I used a similar structural format, except that the colour almost completely engulfed the structural lines, leaving only hints showing through. With Nocturnes the reverse happened – The structural lines became prominent and the colour became the background.
