The Flowers of Evil

1983 -1996

The idea was inspired by Baudelaire's book of poems, Le Fleurs du Mal. These poems captured my imagination and are the reason for the overall dark colouring of the series. The titles I used for each of the six paintings come from the poems.

Despite it's poetic inspiration, music did still play a considerable role. The works of Varese, Xenakis and Penderecki helped push me to take greater chances.

After completing the final painting in 1986, I did a single work, which I considered separate from the series. I have included it here because it was still stylistically related to them. I titled it Symphony No.10
