The Mass series comprise six large paintings corresponding to the six parts of the Christian Mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. The inspiration came from Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, which I discovered in 1970. This year proved to be a crucial one for me, due to my discovery of Beethoven and classical music in general, my passion for which has continued to be a catalyst for the bulk of my output ever since. I cannot stress enough the enormous impact this music made on my work. Almost overnight the rather simple architectonic images I had been developing since art school, exploded into complex and powerful interweaving forms.
